Useful tips for deep house cleaning
It is a good practice to deep clean your home at the beginning of every season. Clearing all the clutter and debris that accumulate throughout the year will give your dwelling a breath of fresh air. Furthermore, that significantly reduces the amount of germs and allergens in your house providing you and your family with a clean and healthy environment. By any means a clean and tidy home is more welcoming and pleasant to live in.
Deep cleaning, however, can be quite difficult and time consuming process and it involves not only thorough cleaning of your property top to bottom, but also some planning and preparation:
1. First of all you need to make sure you have all the cleaning equipment, materials and products required for the job. You will need at least a vacuum cleaner, mop, rugs, scraper, scrubbers, wipes, blue paper, general purpose cleaner, degreaser, oven cleaner, descaler, floor cleaning products both for wooden and tiled flooring, window cleaning solution and polish. The range of products and brands on the market is wide. It is up to you to decide which ones best work for you and your household.
2. Next step: Planning. Unless you do this for a living or have deep-cleaned your home plenty of times and you know by heart the whole process step by step, it is a very good idea to create a check-list for the deep cleaning. If you follow a list of chores to be completed you will be more organized, thus reducing any chances of time-wasting or forgetting a task or area to be cleaned.
3. Include your family in the cleaning. A few more pairs of hands will make the whole task much easier, quicker to complete and hopefully more fun. Plus, you get to have a family get together of a sort.
4. Step four: The Cleaning.
4.1. First, we suggest you start sorting out all clothing and clutter. Leave out only the clothes you will use throughout the new season and safely store away everything else. Do not forget taking care of the clutter of stuff and belongings piling around the house. Sort and arrange or store away everything that you might need or use one day, while clearing away all the junk and stuff you don’t need.
4.2. Curtains provide us with some privacy from the outside world and are a great decoration for any home, but they tend to accumulate large amount of dust and debris. The deep cleaning will not be complete if you miss to wash your curtains.
4.3. Your next step should be thorough vacuum-cleaning of the whole property. Move all furniture and make sure you vacuum behind and under all beds, sofas, armchairs, wardrobes and all other furniture that is not wall-mount. Do the same throughout the whole property, hallways and staircases. Pay special attention and dedicate a bit more time to all high-traffic areas, as these tend to get most contaminated and need extra care. While with the vacuum cleaner don’t forget to look up every now and then and scan the ceiling and all corners for any cob-webs.
4.4. After that you might want to refresh one of the most important furniture in your home – the bed, and most particularly – the mattress. This is the one furniture that on average we spend more than a quarter of our lives on. So, keeping it clean and fresh is essential. Depending on the regularity you do this or the level of contamination, there are different ways to clean a mattress: from a simple regular vacuuming to deep professional cleaning.
4.5. Next you should clean, wipe and polish all surfaces, non-upholstered furniture and fittings. Wipe all belongings and decorations from dust and tidy them up. Don’t forget to clean all windows, doors, door handles, blinds, sockets, light switches, skirting boards, fans, night lamps and chandeliers.
4.6. Once you are done with the bedrooms and living room you should start cleaning the kitchen. This part of the deep cleaning is the most time consuming as there are many appliances, cupboards and drawers to be cleaned. Start with the oven and stove as they require more time and effort. After that clean the refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, coffee machine and etc. Be very thorough with the fridge as this is where you keep your fresh food and there is no room for poor sanitation. When you are done cleaning your appliances empty all cupboards and drawers and deep clean them. Make sure you wash all crockery and cutlery before you put them back in their place. Empty all bins and wash them to remove the unpleasant odour. Then clean and polish all surfaces and mop the floor.
4.7. Next on the agenda is the bathroom. Clear the cabinets and vanity, replace old medications and cosmetics and clean all shelves. Shine your bathroom mirror with the window cleaner and clean the sink. Scrub all tiles, bath and/or shower making sure all scale, mould and debris has been removed. Thoroughly clean and sanitize the toilet and then mop the floors.
4.8. The final stage is carefully inspecting your property for any overlooked areas.
5. Once you have completed the deep cleaning you can sit back, relax and enjoy your clean and fresh home over a nice cup of tea or coffee.
